Australia v Bangladesh: second mens Test, day two – live

Geoff Lemon

And that, my friends, is that. It's been such an entertaining visit from Bangladesh, even if this final day of it was more of a procession. Seeing a team outmatched in resources and personnel be so up for the fight, not just taking the first Test but also the way Shoriful rocked Australia in the second, has been a tonic. We'll remember Shanto's side with great fondness in years to come, I suspect.

And as per Shanto's serve, the onus is now on CA to play a return shot: get this side to Australia as part of the regular touring schedule, not an occasional curiosity.

That's us done on the OBO, we'll catch you next time. Here's the match report:

The two captains get together for a photo with The Floorboard, which is the new trophy struck for this series. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't have a name yet. The Shoriful-Starc Trophy in years to come? In the meantime, you could serve a nice selection of cheeses on it. Presumably given it's a new trophy, it will be shared as the teams finish 1-1.

Cummins also says that he'll be involved in the one-day tour to South Africa before the Test matches in October. Starc said the same.

Pat Cummins is in next, smile on: “A lot of things went right these couple of days, where a lot of things went wrong last week. We needed to bounce back. I thought everyone was really sharp. I don't think we can expect to get 6 for 20 every match, but it was a great start and we didn't let up after that.â€

Bangladesh skipper Shanto says that the tour is still “a very proud moment for the teamâ€, and that the pitch here was difficult to bat on for both sides

“We showed our character and discipline, and we need to be consistent. I believe if we are able to get more chances in similar kind of conditions, it will help us, and that's what we want. Not a long time like 23 years to play two Test matches, it's not easy. If we have the chance to play every single year it will help our game.â€

Player of the match and player of the series is Mitch Starc, who modestly observes that a current teammate of his is still ahead of him on the wicket charts.

Walsh, Ashwin, McGrath, Lyon, Broad, Kumble, Anderson, Warne, Muralitharan are the nine players with more Test wickets.

Really nice moment there with Shoriful standing down on the field having a long chat with Mitchell Starc, his idol as a fellow tall rangy left-armer. A couple of the coaching staff in that chat as well. Worth seeing what their player can learn from one of the best, who made his way into the top 10 Test wicket-takers in this match. He's at 445 now, having passed a peloton of players, and now has a fair way before he could catch anyone else – Courtney Walsh is next rung up at 519.

The usual reticent non-answers from Nathan Lyon, master of saying nothing: yeah, Greeny looked good; yeah, lucky enough to get a couple of wickets; yeah, our bowlers are pretty good. He got 11.3 overs in the second dig after not getting a bowl in the first. He bowled 31 and 5 overs in Darwin, however. He will be better for the run.

Josh Hazlewood speaking now, reiterating that nothing about the conditions in Mackay meant that the match should have finished in two days. There was always the risk of this sort of finish though, with the Bangladesh players having to adapt so comprehensively, and Australia's batting unable to push the timeframe out either. Shoriful Islam played as much a part in the short game as some of the Australians, seven wickets in the one innings that he had to bowl.

For all that Australia have had a big win, they also batted poorly and have their bowlers to thank for salvaging an otherwise weak position. The question marks over their top seven are multiplying. Cam Green is chatting on the telly, and he's one of the few questions that has been resolved in the short term, having played so well when the rest were struggling with his ton in Darwin and 67 here.

Australia win by an innings and 51 runs

When you make a modest 210 and win by an innings, that says most of what needs to be said about the other team's batting efforts. Bangladesh have been as poor here as they were good in Darwin, the specialists unable to cope with bounce in the pitch, but also getting out to full-pitched deliveries that didn't much use that bounce. The tail then weren't able to salvage anything, having been left too much to do.

WICKET! Shoriful c Starc b Lyon 0, Bangladesh all out 95

Total capitulation from Bangladesh. I'm not sure what benefit Shoriful thought there would be in him playing a massive swipe second ball, but he does, galloping down the track and aiming a big drive over cover. Another left-hander, he instead slices it to backward point where Starc is set quite deep, and fittingly the man who took most of the wickets has now finished off the match as a fielder. Lyon gets a couple of cheap ones late.

WICKET! Taskin c Smith b Lyon 8, Australia 95-9

First ball after tea! The most common dismissal combination in Australian history, caught Smith bowled Lyon, strikes again. Taskin drives down the line, the off break turns away from the edge, and Smith takes it low down to his right, two-handed, well caught.

We're back…

Tea, Day 2 – Bangladesh 95 for 8, trail by 51

As Regina Spektor sang, it's only a matter of who, and it's only a matter of when. Bangladesh still odds-on to lose by an innings, Australia two good balls away, and the only hope for a little pride is for Mushfiqur to work out his approach with the tail and somehow string another 50 runs together in the way that Mehidy did in Darwin. This ain't Darwin, though. The crocs are chomping.

38th over: Bangladesh 95-8 (Mushfiqur 29, Taskin 8) Edged away! Nasty delivery from Starc, who is still around the wicket to the right-hander. Gets a ball to really jump at the very short Mushfiqur, who fends it off his glove through the cordon for four. Makes it through the over, just, to reach the safety of the tea break.

37th over: Bangladesh 91-8 (Mushfiqur 25, Taskin 8) Once again, Mushfiqur takes a run first ball of Lyon's over. Surely the senior batter has to make charge of the situation, not just meander to a little 30 not out? Taskin prods at Lyon's first two offerings with all the confidence of an amateur bomb defuser, then he explodes, a strong long on drive for six. Always likely to be his way against spin.

36th over: Bangladesh 84-8 (Mushfiqur 24, Taskin 2) A similar shot to Taijul's is played by Taskin Ahmed, but he does make contact with it, out through cover for two. He bats left-handed despite bowing right-arm. Starc stays over the wicket for a couple of balls, as he was to Taijul, then switches around the wicket and tries yorker, bouncer, bouncer. Play the classics.

WICKET! Taijul b Starc 7, Bangladesh 82-8

Timberrr! Exposing Taijul to so much of the strike stops working. Starc comes back on, a surprising change of ends after having taken nine wickets in the match, but it takes him one ball to find his 10th for the match! In at the left-hander's leg stump, Taijul backs away to leg, and is nowhere in the same postcode as his ill-fated grope at the line of the ball fails to make contact.

35th over: Bangladesh 82-7 (Mushfiqur 24, Taijul 7) Taijul is doing the bulk of the scoring. A single cut away by Mushfiqur, and Taijul follows that with a drive past point. It goes to the rope, or looks like it, but the pursuing Green somehow gets his giant frame down onto the ground and taps the ball back just before it makes contact. One run saved. Mushy drives another single.

34th over: Bangladesh 76-7 (Mushfiqur 22, Taijul 3) Third ball of the over this time when Mushy takes the run from Cummins. And on cue, Taijul is almost dismissed. Hooks a ball into the deep, the outfielder approaches, but it just drops short and yields two runs instead. The deficit is 70.

33rd over: Bangladesh 73-7 (Mushfiqur 21, Taijul 1) Taijul does the job against his fellow spinner this time, blocking out the over.

32nd over: Bangladesh 73-7 (Mushfiqur 21, Taijul 1) Still 74 runs away from making Australia bat again. Not sure about this approach from Mushfiqur though. Took a Hasan single late in the over to get the bowler on strike to Cummins, who got him out soon afterwards, and now he takes a run for himself first ball of the Cummins over. He needs to trust his partners, sure, but he can also try to help them stay out there for a while and get used to being in the middle before they have to face the quick stuff. He should be absorbing most of the strike. Instead, leg bye fifth ball that will leave Taijul on strike for the next over as well.

31st over: Bangladesh 71-7 (Mushfiqur 20, Taijul 1) Another quick over from Lyon. Taijul misses out on a freebie, short and wide, cut shot is edged into the ground instead of smashed to the rope.

30th over: Bangladesh 71-7 (Mushfiqur 20, Taijul 1) Innings defeat loading. Taijul Islam does well enough to knock down a Cummins length ball and get off strike from his first chance, but Cummins follows up with a peach that zips off the pitch and past Mushfiqur's edge. Still lots of carry in this surface.

WICKET! Hasan Mahmud c Head b Cummins 2, Bangladesh 7-70

There's the next one to fall quickly. Cummins bowls into the ribs, not the most threatening delivery but Hasan gets into an awful tangle, half thinking about the pull shot, then cringing away from the ball trying to block it. Glove onto bat, looks like, lobs up, Head at short leg is set fairly deep for that position but runs in to snare the ball as it drops, and knocks off the bails on his way past the stumps for good measure.

29th over: Bangladesh 70-6 (Mushfiqur 20, Hasan 1) Starc is off, what doing? I'll bet he comes back if another couple fall quickly. Meanwhile, Cummins wants to get Lyon into the game. The off spinner bowls a quiet over to Mahmud, who keeps strike late in the over with a push down the ground.

28th over: Bangladesh 69-6 (Mushfiqur 20, Hasan 1) So we're into the bowlers for Bangladesh, and still 78 runs in the red. Hasan Mahmud batted a long time in Darwin, can he do something to support Mushfiqur here? He gets off the mark with a stabbed push that would have been caught at short leg, had their been one, and keeps strike for the next over.

WICKET! Mehidy c Carey b Cummins 1, Bangladesh 68-6

Oh no. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, what have you done? He batted so well in Darwin to press home their advantage. This time he can't dig them out of the ball. Gets a rank short wide ball, throws a cut shot at it, no shape, and top edges it through to the keeper. Cummins looks around at teammates and says, “That's the worst ball I've bowled all day.â€

27th over: Bangladesh 67-5 (Mushfiqur 19, Mehidy 1) Thanks Megan. It's Mitchell Starc continuing, one wicket away from another 10-wicket match. Hunting here, on a nice line to Mehidy, who cracks a cover punch on the up from the final ball but it's brilliantly stopped by sub fielder Inglis at cover who flies away to deny any scoring.

26th over: Bangladesh 67-5 (Mushfiqur 19, Mehidy 1) Hazlewood resumes and Mushfiqur takes two runs to keep the score ticking over as wickets fall around him. The crowd are quacking away at Mehidy when he gets on strike late in the over, but he dashes through for a single to quieten them down. I'm off now and will leave you in the very capable hands of Geoff Lemon. Enjoy the rest of the day!

25th over: Bangladesh 63-5 (Mushfiqur 16, Mehidy 0) Das is back on strike to Starc and desperately wants to score a run here. He tries to take off for one after a defensive shot, but Musfiqur is having none of it and sends him straight back. Eventually he is brought undone and drinks are taken before Starc resumes his over to Mehidy. A wicket maiden – great over from Starc.

WICKET! Litton Kumer Das c Webster b Starc 0 (Bangladesh 63-5)

The bowling change works for Australia and Starc's persistent line and length eventually gets Das, who hasn't been able to get off the mark. He edges to Webster at third slip, who holds on to it well.

24th over: Bangladesh 63-4 (Mushfiqur 16, Das 0) Mushfiqur opens the face of the bat and plays a lovely shot for four to start Hazlewood's over. Hazlewood tightens his line up to target the stumps and force Mushfiqur to play more defensively and try to draw out a mistake.

23rd over: Bangladesh 59-4 (Mushfiqur 12, Das 0) As predicted, Starc is back in the attack – a hard call after Lyon got that key wicket last over. But they clearly want Starc to try to get Das out before he has a chance to settle. Das is very watchful to start. Late in the over he flashes his bat at one coming across him, but is lucky not to have got bat on it. A maiden from Starc.

22nd over: Bangladesh 59-4 (Mushfiqur 12, Das 0) Hazlewood resumes to Mushfiqur, who is still playing very patiently and isn't prepared to throw away his wicket. He knows he is important to Bangladesh's chances in this match. Midway through the over he pounces on an overpitched delivery and drives it straight down the ground for four. The next ball he doesn't quite manage to duck under a bouncer and it clips his back, but then runs away to the boundary for a handy four leg byes. Starc is warming up now, so we may see him back in the action soon.

21st over: Bangladesh 51-4 (Mushfiqur 8, Das 0) Shanto starts Lyon's over with a strong shot back at Lyon and dashes off for a run, but then realises Lyon has fielded the ball and scurries back into his crease very quickly. Lyon gets Shanto's wicket on the final ball of the over.

WICKET! Shanto c Starc b Lyon 31 (Bangladesh 51-4)

At last Australia get the breakthrough they wanted. Lyon lures Shanto into a well set trap and he spoons it straight to long off and into the waiting hands of Mitchell Starc.

20th over: Bangladesh 49-3 (Mushfiqur 7, Shanto 30) As suspected, Hazlewood is back into the attack now – can he get the breakthrough Australia are looking for? There's a big appeal for LBW midway through the over, but the umpire won't come to the party and Hazlewood decides it's not worth a review – he thinks it's drifting down leg. Turns out there was also an inside edge, so a good decision not to review. A maiden for Hazlewood.

19th over: Bangladesh 49-3 (Mushfiqur 7, Shanto 30) Mushfiqur has more of an attacking mindset against Lyon and looks to play his shots more than he did against Cummins, but he can't pierce the infield until late in the over.

18th over: Bangladesh 44-3 (Mushfiqur 6, Shanto 26) Cummins resumes and we can see Hazlewood warming up in the field, so expect a bowling change soon. The second ball of the over nips back in and just misses both the inside edge and the stumps – it's a very good delivery. This is a fascinating battle between Cummins and Mushfiqur – Cummins appears to have his measure, but Mushfiqur is standing his ground and refusing to give up his wicket. Eventually he manages to push one past Cummins and get off strike after being pinned down there for quite some time.

17th over: Bangladesh 43-3 (Mushfiqur 5, Shanto 26) We take a little pause as the physio runs out to have a look at Mushfiqur's finger, but all appears to be OK and Lyon continues his spell. After 23 consecutive dot balls, Shanto breaks the run of no runs with a single. Mushfiqur takes a run of his own at the end of the over by opening the face of the bat and playing one nicely behind him.

16th over: Bangladesh 41-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 25) Cummins clips Mushfiqur's finger on the first ball of the over, which looks quite painful, but his gloves are up to the job and he's right to continue. He nearly gets an outside edge next ball, but luckily for Mushfiqur he can't quite get bat on it. He goes back to playing more defensively. Cummins finishes the over with a bouncer for another maiden.

15th over: Bangladesh 41-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 25) Lyon continues and Labuschagne ups his volume, though he hasn't brought out any of his quirky ‘shampoo and conditioner' style shouts as yet. Lyon nearly gets the breakthrough late in the over when Shanto chips it back at him, but it doesn't quite carry.

14th over: Bangladesh 41-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 25) Cummins starts with a wider delivery that doesn't tempt Mushfiqur, he's happy to leave at this stage. The challenge for Cummins will be to force him to play at the ball, as he looks so comfortable leaving. Cummins adjusts his line late in the over and gets Mushfiqur defending.

13th over: Bangladesh 41-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 25) Lyon resumes his spell – I wasn't sure if they would continue with spin or were just trying to squeeze in an extra over before lunch. He's asking plenty of questions with his bowling – a good over from him.

12th over: Bangladesh 39-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 23) Cummins starts us off after lunch – picking up where he left off with excellent bowling that Mushfiqur can't do much with but leave and defend. A maiden to start the session.

The players are heading back out on the field now, so finish up your lunch and let's get ready to get back into it!

Some interesting discussions during the break about batters and spinners and who Australia's up and coming options are. Have you got any thoughts? Kerry O'Keeffe is bemoaning the lack of a quality leg spinner coming through and I do agree there – do you know of any male Alana Kings coming up the ranks? I'd love to hear about them. Send me an email – the link is at the top of the page.

Lunch: Bangladesh 39 for 3, trailing Australia by 107

Well it's been an intriguing day's play so far. Australia's tail wagged to add some more runs and extend their lead and then Starc got up to his usual tricks, taking two wickets in his second over to make things very difficult for the visitors. Cummins chipped in with a wicket as well to put Australia in a dominant position. But Shanto has continued to play smart, attacking cricket and is keeping Bangladesh in the match. Take a breath and get some lunch and I'll see you back after the break!

11th over: Bangladesh 39-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 23) Lyon comes into the attack for the first time this match, as the quicks got the job done in the first innings without even needing to throw Lyon the ball. Renshaw comes in at short leg. Carey appeals for a catch midway through the over, the umpire says no, but Carey is determined there was an edge and talks Cummins into the review. He'll have to apologise for that later as there was a flat line on snicko as the ball passed the bat. It's a maiden for Lyon from his first over.

10th over: Bangladesh 39-3 (Mushfiqur 4, Shanto 23) Cummins resumes and Mushfiqur immediately dashes down the pitch to get off strike. Shanto gets a little outside edge, but it falls safely. It's a tidy over from Cummins – there's an LBW appeal on the last ball of the over, but he decides it's drifting down leg so doesn't review.

9th over: Bangladesh 37-3 (Mushfiqur 3, Shanto 22) Shanto decides to take Starc on this over and starts with two very determined fours. Starc fights back with what looks like an excellent yorker, but turns out to be a massive front foot no ball. He tightens up and the next few balls are good, but Mushfiqur punches one nicely back past Starc for a well-run three to finish the over.

8th over: Bangladesh 24-3 (Mushfiqur 0, Shanto 13) Pat Cummins enters the attack for the first time today, replacing Hazlewood. He starts with a short ball, then gets into niggling away at Tanzid with a great yorker length. Marnus is warming up his bowling, which I can only presume is him trying to sway Cummins into bowling him, rather than a directive to warm up. Cummins takes the wicket for a very succesful first over – a wicket maiden.
