A weekend with something for everyone. Two new streaming series hit their stride, one new theatrical release is worth the trip, a prestige DC drama makes its debut on Sunday, and one of the more lowkey but compelling catalogue additions of the year dropped on Netflix just yesterday. Here is what to watch this weekend, Aug 14 to Aug 16.
Reacher Season 4 (August 12, Prime Video)
Alan Ritchson is back as Jack Reacher; he's large, he's competent, and once again involved in something considerably more dangerous than he signed up for. Season 4 dropped the first three episodes on Wednesday, and opens with Reacher witnessing a young woman take her own life on the subway, pulling him into a CIA conspiracy. If the first three seasons worked for you, this will work for you. If you have not watched any of them, this is also a perfectly fine place to start because the show does not require continuity.
My Brilliant Career (August 13, Netflix)
This is not a remake of the 1979 Judy Davis and Sam Neill film, though the 1979 version (Davis won the BAFTA for Best Actress and the film received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations) is also available to stream on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and Prime Video if you want the original.
The 2026 Netflix series is a new six-episode adaptation of Miles Franklin's classic novel, starring Philippa Northeast and Christopher Chung, premiering all six episodes simultaneously on August 13. Did somebody say cozy binge?
The story follows Sybylla Melvyn — restless, razor-sharp, anti-conformity, you get the vibes — navigating 1890s rural Australia while fighting off expectations of marriage and insisting, loudly, on a career.
If ratings mean anything to you at all, the show presently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The reviews are loving it, I'm sure you will too.
The End Of Oak Street (August 14, cinemas)
The theatrical pick of the weekend. Director David Robert Mitchell has not made a feature since Under the Silver Lake in 2018, and The End of Oak Street stars a booked-and-busy Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as parents navigating what happens to a suburban family after a cosmic event transports their neighbourhood somewhere unrecognizable. And um, filled with unwanted visitors, to say the least. A survival drama from the director of It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, both of which prioritised atmosphere and unease over conventional plotting, is worth the trip to a cinema for anyone who liked either of those films. Check cinemas near you.
Six: The Musical Live! (August 14, US Cinemas)
As a theatre kid living not in the West, believe me when I say I am entirely green right now. This West End and Broadway phenomenon showcases the six wives of Henry VIII reclaiming their stories in a pop concert format, and now a live recorded version is coming to cinemas this weekend. If you have not seen Six on stage and have been waiting for an accessible entry point, this is it. Check local listings for availability.
Lanterns (August 16, HBO Max)
The DCU's newest prestige series premieres in the Sunday night slot, with Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart investigating a murder in rural Nebraska that turns out to be something more than it appears. Also, Nathan Fillion will be back! We love Nathan Fillion!
This will be a weekly release, with eight episodes running through October 4. After the mixed critical response to Supergirl, this is DC's most anticipated streaming debut of the year. For those keeping up with DCU canon, Lanterns will be part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Ted Lasso Season 4 (Weekly, Apple TV+)
Okay, you got me. This isn't a new release, BUT, if you are watching weekly, Episode 2 of the long awaited revival dropped on Wednesday and is waiting for you to catch up this weekend. If you're not up to it, you can read last week's recap here. Best watched with a biscuit. Failing that, smoked meat on a little fork.
Lioness Season 3 (Weekly, Paramount+)
Taylor Sheridan's CIA thriller returns for a third season on Paramount+, with Zoe Saldaña reprising her role as Joe, the field leader of a covert programme that recruits civilian women to infiltrate terrorist networks. Yellowstone creator Sheridan's Paramount+ output has been the platform's most reliable prestige offering, and Lioness has been its most underrated. Season 3 dropped its first episodes August 2, but there's much to catch up on.
