President Donald Trump will be in Dover on July 22 to attend the dignified transfer of United States service members killed overseas.
U.S. Central Command said three service members were killed over the weekend, USA TODAY reported July 20, with others announced later this week bringing the total troop fatalities to 18 since war in Iran began. This escalation follows the breakdown of an interim ceasefire agreement, as previously reported, while tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue to intensify.
One of those soldiers was killed in an unexploded drone in Iraq and at least three others in an attack in Jordan, while the administration has indicated its current campaign has left Iran “very badly damaged” with “very little left” militarily.
Come July 19, those killed in Jordan were identified as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas. Shortly after announcing the fatalities, U.S. Central Command said it launched another round of strikes. In a release July 21, the soldier killed in a “controlled detonation†of a downed Iranian drone was identified as Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, of North Carolina.
The same day, the Pentagon identified another solider believed to have been killed in Jordan as 28-year-old Army Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad of Ozone Park, New York, as reported by CBS News that evening.
Wednesday morning in Dover, around 11 a.m., the president and a closed pool of media should expect a solemn ceremony, as flag-draped caskets arrive from the Middle East.
The war with Iran, which began in late February, is in its fifth month.
